DIGITAL STONE EXHIBITION 《

The Intersection of Art and Technology (A Documentary by Joanne Cheng, 25min,2008)

DIGITAL STONE EXHIBITION (DOCUMENTARY TRAILER)

DIGITAL STONE EXHIBITION   SYNOPSIS

Digital Stone Exhibition highlights the creative process of four contemporary American artists Kenneth Snelson, Bruce Beasley, Jon Isherwood and Robert Michael Smith whose sculptural works demonstrate the fusion of digital technologies of the West with traditional craftsmanship of the East. A intimate Look at the intersection of art and technology.

The artists start with Autodesk design tools to form and stretch complex shapes for their sculptures, before a single stone is cut. Then, they work with some of the finest stone carvers in China, who use 3D rapid prototypes to create the extraordinary stone sculptures featured in a travelling exhibition in China (Beijing Today Art Museum. Shanghai Duolun Museum and Jinse Gallery in Chongqing)

CARL BASS INTERVIEW BY JOANNE CHENG,2008 (Part of Digital Stone Exhibition Documentary)

Cheng: What’s the essence or spirit of Autodesk?Bass: Who am I? I’ve always been very interested in building things. I’m somebody who is fascinated by ideas, fascinated by mathematics, intrigued by how things work and put together. This is really a kind of combination that bringing those kind of things together, how the world works, how the mind works in terms of creating stuff. One thing I particularly like about is this is building things with a clearly purpose of soliciting emotional response. What I like to do is being involved is to do it myself. This is a little bit unusual because I feel like part of the role. It’s more of orchestra with a lot of people doing it. Usually I’m more interested in doing things myself.

Bass: For Autodesk, it’s innovation and creativity. It’s allowing people to pursue their ideas. One of the things I think about is someone who has made stuff in many different mediums and many different times. Whenever anyone made stuffs, when you are done, you are really ready to move on to the next thing and you’ve learnt from it. By the time when I finish any piece, I don’t really want to see it. I don’t really even care what happens to it. I’m much interested in the next one. One of the things I want to do with Autodesk is to make sure that we give people the tools so that they can understand what they are building earlier. If you build anything, the earlier you understand it and the earlier you experience it, the better it will end up being. What we are trying to do is to give people the tools they can experience sooner.

Cheng: What’s your connection with China?

Bass: I’m fascinated with China. I think it has enormous of tradition of innovation. It has great tradition in sciences. Many of the greatest inventions started in China as well as great traditions of arts. I see a reblossom of China over the past 30 or 40 years going on there. I think China will be the next great power in the world. It has already been a very important country and it has a great tradition to build on it. I’m excited just to be part of it. It’s important Autodesk is there. Autodesk is going to benefit greatly by being involved and accessing those wonderful talents and the skills that are in China.

Cheng: What’s your connection with China?

Bass: Follow your heart. Go to design and build the things that you want. You’ll figure out how to make money alone the way.
