ON GETTING IN TOUCH WITH MY CHINESE ROOTS
I spent thirty days in the birth place of Confucius Nishan,Shandong Province
recording the experience of western philosophers learning Analects
taught by American scholars or philosophers.
Of course they were Chinese philosophers’ students too.
That experience is really enriching for me
I felt I lost touch with my Chinese roots.
The more I learn English, the more I would like to know about my own culture.
I feel I am such a child, knowing so little about my own culture.
I wasn’t taught any of the Chinese classic culture when I was a young girl during Cultural Revolution.
So for me, it is a learning experience making this film.
I must know the roots of the classic Chinese culture.
Learning about Confucius, learning about Zhuangzi, Laozi, or Mengzi,
Going back to their hometown was very enriching experience.
I want to share that with my audience.
I had a lecture last night on 梁漱溟, a Chinese philosopher embracing the Confucius practice.
So I feel I need to seek some answers from this Chinese setting,
So I could be more balanced
I feel like I am little bit too rational, scientific, or western in terms of working.
Although my passion was very Chinese
Very 孝顺，非常孝顺, like respecting parents, wanting to do things for them,
wanting to give back and teach in my own university.
so there is certain conflict here between my passion, my heart and my mind.
So I need to coordinate
Maybe I should learn or ask help from Confucius or something,
or so-called heaven, earth, people should be in one.
This put me onto the journey of students
I am a student again, everyday

我在孔子出生地山东尼山拍片30天
纪录西方哲学学者学习《论语》的经历
由美国儒学教授或哲学家授课
其中也有中国哲学学生听课
这段经历让我更丰富
我觉得我脱离中国文化根太久
在英语文化中走的越深越想了解中国文化
我对自己的文化根所知甚少 简直就像孩子一样
中国古典文化没学到
因我的童年在文革中度过
拍此片是学习的过程 我必须了解中国古典文化的根
学习孔子 庄子老子孟子 老子
参观他们的家乡很受益
我希望和观众分享
昨夜我参加了一个梁漱溟讲座
他做为中国哲学家实践儒学
我需要从中国环境中寻找一些答案
以求平衡
我觉得自己太西方工作态度太趋于理智讲究科学性
我的情怀很中国
比如孝顺 照顾父母 回报母校
我的情怀和理智有矛盾 需要调理
也许孔子会启迪我
让天人合一
我又变成学生了
做为学生我又要开启每日的航程了
