Press Release
March 14th, 2012, Beijing
BFSU Documentary Forum 2012 will feature award winning American documentaries SOMEWHERE BETWEEN by Linda Goldstein Knowlton and UNFINISHED SPACES by Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray who will engage in conversation with BFSU students and staff at 1:50-5:15pm on March 16th Friday at 300 seat auditorium. This event, organized by Joanne Cheng of Communication Arts Center at BFSU in collaboration with CNEX and the US Embassy in China, is part of FILM FORWARD 2012, an initiative of Sundance institute aiming to enhance cross cultural understanding through film exhibition and dialogue with audiences around the globe.
UNFINISHED SPACES charts the journey through almost boundless creative ambition, the destructive force of bureaucracy, and the aftermath on the lives of the architects. In 1961, three young, visionary architects were commissioned to create Cuba’s National Art Schools on the grounds of a former golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction of their radical designs began immediately and the school’s first classes soon followed. Dancers, musicians and artists from all over the country reveled in the beauty of the schools, but as the dream of the Revolution quickly became a reality, construction was abruptly halted and the architects and their designs were deemed irrelevant in the prevailing political climate. It’s a stunning film, both in narrative and photographic terms.
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN by Linda Goldstein Knowlton is a heartwarming the story of adoption of four teenage girls adjusting to life in the US after their Chinese birth parents are forced to part with them due to China’s One-Child policy. The film provides an intimate look into the lives of teenage adoptees as they come to terms with their unique identities.
Our annual Documentary Forum has become a BFSU tradition in terms of intercultural education. It’s important for my students to meet professionals working in the real world engaged in critical issues of today. UNFINISHED SPACES is a fascinating tale of visionary aesthetics and creative expression while SOMEWHERE BETWEEN is a heart-warming coming of age story addressing gender and identity issues in addition to challenges of living in between cultures,” said Joanne Cheng, director of Communication Arts Center, also a Beijing-New York based filmmaker and associate professor of Cinema and Television who has been teaching Documentary Production, Film Aesthetics and Broadcast Journalism at School of English and International Studies at BFSU since 2009.
Communication Arts Center (CAC) is a creative communication center producing and promoting professional TV, film and multimedia programs and events that facilitate intercultural communications at local and global level. The center , which has produced more than half a dozen professional events under the direction of Cheng since its founding in 2010, has been the training ground for BFSU’s students who plan to enter media and TV/Film world

Linda Goldstein Knowlton
